Thai Massage

What it is:

Thai Massage, also known as Thai Yoga Massage, is rooted in Chinese and Indian healing traditions as a holistic approach to wellness for mind, body and spirit. A systematic massage, it focuses on energy lines called sen lines that are similar to meridians in Chinese medicine and nadis in ayurvedic traditions. The underlying philosophy is that stagnant energy in the body gives rise to pain, discomfort and disease.  Thai Massage techniques help move energy to assist the systems of the body to normalize, increasing the flow of vital blood and nutrients and an overall feeling of wellbeing.

History of Thai Massage:

Having roots in Ayurvedic medicine, Yoga, Buddhism and Chinese Acupressure, Thai Massage is a unique blend of bodywork. Dating back around 2,500 years, little is written about it, except for inscribed stone tablets kept in the Wat Pho temple in Bangkok.  Most of the knowledge of Thai Massage was passed down through oral tradition from master to student. Naud Bo’Rarn is the traditional name meaning “ancient massage.” It spread to Thailand with the expansion of Buddhism. The style of massage was influenced by traditional Thai Medicine as well as the Chinese influence coming into Thailand. Until recently people in Thailand needed to go to temples to experience this healing art form. People began practicing in their homes to help family members and with the rise of tourism in Thailand, Thai Massage is now working its way into western culture.

What to expect in a Thai Massage session:

Working on a mat on the floor the practitioner moves the client in a fluid dance, using her whole body — hands, feet, knees and elbows. Thai Massage is given fully clothed and using little if any oil. Working with gentle rocking, rhythmic compression, acupressure and yogic-like stretches, we open the muscles, joints and energy lines of the body. This helps greatly increase flexibility and range of motion.  Over all when you are finished you will leave with a general sense of well being and connection in mind, body, and spirit and will move more freely, physically as well as mentally and spiritually.

Beneficial for most complaints, from physical to emotional, to spiritual, Thai massage provides support, helping release physical, emotional and mental tension. Thai Massage is a meditation for client and practitioner, benefiting them both by stimulating the Parasympathetic Nervous System, the part of the Nervous System that induces relaxation (happy hormones like serotonin) and also where the body repairs tissue and facilitates elimination. We actually help the body to bring forth its own healing potential. Creating balance and harmony in the body, subtle body, emotional body and mind is the ultimate goal.
