Why did the Incas consider raw cacao the “drink of the Gods?”
Probably due to the impressive list of mind/body benefits attributed to this superfood power house. The following are some of our favorites:
- Medicine for the Heart. Raw cacao brings us into the energy of the heart with anandamide, aka the bliss molecule. This happy molecule repels Scrooge-like energy, lifts the mood and creates a feeling of euphoria throughout the body.
- Boost Your Libido. An aphrodisiac, raw cacao contains PEA, or phenethylamine, which triggers the release of endorphins and pleasurable opium-like neurochemicals. It is similar to the feeling of falling in love or during sexual activity. No wonder chocolate is so popular on Valentine’s Day!
- Protect Your Heart Health. Of all known foods, cacao has the highest antioxidant polyphenol content. These polyphenols, including flavanols, provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that fiercely combat cardiovascular disease.
- Chase Away the Blues. Feeling down? Turn to the anti-depressant properties of cacao to lift your spirits. Raw cacao contains an abundance of agents that increase production of feel-good chemicals in the brain, including serotonin and dopamine.
