yoga-lotusYour body is self-healing, self-regenerating and self-renewing. It knows exactly how to combat illness and keep you healthy.

However, when the “fight or flight” response of the sympathetic nervous system kicks in due to stress, these self-healing mechanisms freeze.

Unfortunately, our culture is high-strung on stress. On one hand, daily activities like driving in traffic can cause enormous stress. On the other hand, the mind is constantly thinking up stressful scenarios, such as financial worry, work stress, relationship challenges, and all kinds of negative beliefs. While there is no physical danger in these thoughts, the body reacts as if there is and goes into “fight or flight.”

The key is to de-stress and to nurture your innate self-healing potential.

Try this:

  1. Believe in your ability to heal – We’ve all heard of the “placebo effect.” For over 50 years the medical establishment has observed this phenomenon: When people believe they should be getting better, many of them do. Probably this has to do with the stress relief that comes with a treatment, even if the treatment is fake.
  2. Seek the right support – We are not meant to live in isolation and we all need compassionate and supportive people on our health care team who can help us relax and nurture our parasympathetic nervous system.
  3. Cultivate your intuition – Your body is incredibly wise and is always speaking to you through symptoms. Listen for the deeper messages so you can shift what is not working in your life.
