It’s smoothie season! Smoothies are a great way to consume a variety of power-packed nutrients first thing in the morning, or whenever you need a light meal or snack. Follow the guide to smoothie making below and have lots of fun creating!
There are 4 main components in the formulation of a phenomenal superfood smoothie. By experimenting with different combinations of ingredients, flavor and nutrition possibilities are endless.
1) Liquid Base: The liquid base is is what ensures that your smoothie is drinkable and can be selected for its nutritive qualities. For example, green tea can be used to add extra anti-oxidants. Other examples are spring water, coconut water, nut milks and fruit juices.
2) Fruit: There are so many amazing fruits that add sweetness and nutrition to your smoothies. Some favorites are frozen blueberries, banana, papaya (add the seeds for a little zing and lots of digestive enzymes), and mango.
3) Vegetables: Adding leafy greens to your smoothie is a rock star way to get more of these potent vegetables into your diet. Kale, lettuce, parsley, carrot tops, beet greens, arugula…the list goes on and on.
4) Superfoods: It gets really fun now. How about a scoop of high quality whey protein powder? Or a spoon of spirulina or chlorella, a dash of turmeric powder, a sprinkle of cacao nibs, coconut flakes, shredded ginger root, maca powder, hemp or chia seeds, coconut oil, bee pollen, aloe gel, goji berries…The good earth offers so many nourishing possibilities.
